Vinayaka idols immersion held amid tight security in southern districts of Tamil Nadu

Amid tight security, 72 Vinayaka idols that were installed at public places in Kadayanallur, Puliyangudi and Sankarankoil for worship as part of Vinayaka Chathurthi celebration were immersed peacefully on Wednesday.

In Sankarankoil, 29 idols were taken in procession by the event organisers for immersion while 28 idols were immersed in Kadayanallur where the police had made elaborate security arrangements. Besides deploying a few hundred policemen along the procession route, strict vigil was maintained in the adjacent areas.

In Puliyangudi, 12 idols were immersed after being taken in procession with police protection.

A major portion of the 1,600 police personnel deployed for the Vinayaka idol procession at Shencottai on Tuesday were shifted to these three places on Wednesday to ensure peaceful immersion of the idols in waterbodies.

Thoothukudi

As many as 132 idols were immersed in the sea in Tiruchendur with the protection of 600 police personnel. Idols were also immersed off Threspuram beach in Thoothukudi.

The idols were brought in procession from Arumuganeri, Authoor, Tiruchendur, Nazareth, Alwarthirunagari, Kurumbur, Meignanapuram, Kulasekarapattinam and Sattankulam. The police, led by Superintendent of Police Arun Balagopalan, had made the security arrangements. No untoward incidents were reported.
