In a setback for the Indian cricket team, Virat Kohli, a key figure in the squad, has opted out of the first two Tests against England citing ‘personal reasons’. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the news through an official statement on Monday. While the BCCI has not yet named a replacement for Kohli, it assures that a decision will be made in due course.

This is not the first instance of Kohli’s absence from the team due to personal reasons, as he had earlier pulled out of the first T20I against Afghanistan. The nature of the personal situation he is dealing with has not been disclosed.

The BCCI statement highlighted, “Mr. Virat Kohli has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to be withdrawn from the first two Tests of the upcoming IDFC First Bank Test series against England, citing personal reasons.”

The statement further revealed that Kohli has communicated with captain Rohit Sharma, the team management, and the selectors, emphasizing that, while representing the country has always been his top priority, certain personal situations demand his presence and undivided attention.

The BCCI has expressed respect for Kohli’s decision, extending support to the star batter. The Board is confident in the abilities of the remaining squad members to step up and deliver commendable performances in the Test series.

The official statement also urged the media and fans to respect Virat Kohli’s privacy during this time and refrain from speculating on the nature of his personal reasons. The focus should remain on supporting the Indian cricket team as they embark on the upcoming challenges in the Test series.

The Men’s Selection Committee is expected to name a replacement soon. India is set to play a five-match Test series against England, with the first match scheduled for January 25 in Hyderabad. The second match of the series will take place on February 2 in Vizag. Virat Kohli is anticipated to return for the remaining three matches of the series.
