After its recent introduction in France, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has now expanded its footprint to include Sri Lanka and Mauritius. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, virtually attended the launch event.

During the ceremony, the introduction of RuPay cards in Mauritius was also announced, marking another step in the global outreach of Indian digital payment systems.

The virtual presence of Prime Minister Modi emphasized the significance of India’s cultural and people-to-people ties with Sri Lanka and Mauritius. The launch is expected to provide a swift and seamless digital transaction experience, enhancing digital connectivity between the three nations.

The move enables Indians visiting Sri Lanka and Mauritius to use UPI for payments, while Mauritians traveling to India will also have access to this digital payment system. Additionally, the extension of RuPay services will empower Mauritian banks to issue RuPay cards, facilitating settlements in both India and Mauritius.

Highlighting India’s leadership in Fintech innovation and Digital Public Infrastructure, the government stated, “Prime Minister has placed a strong emphasis on sharing our development experiences and innovation with partner countries.”

The global expansion of UPI commenced with its launch at the Eiffel Tower in Paris on February 2 during the Republic Day reception. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of taking UPI to a global audience.

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a mobile-based payment system in India that enables round-the-clock payments via a virtual payment address. It consolidates multiple bank accounts into a single app, offering various banking features in a unified platform.
